No matter which operational role you would like to pursue, there are minimum training requirements set by the state and county that you must complete. Below we have listed the typical training requirements for new members to become cleared for their desired role.
Notes:
- Prior to the start of most training courses, new personnel must complete a department sponsored pre-employment physical with the county healthcare provider.
- Some courses (like Hazmat Awareness and ICS courses) are online, self-paced and have very few prerequisites to start.
Firefighter
Formal Training
- MFRI Firefighter 1 Course (or equivalent) – 135 hours
- Hazmat Awareness Course – 8 hours
On-the-job Training
- Completion of the EVFD Firefighter Rookie Book
Additional Training
- Emergency Medical Responder or Emergency Medical Technician – within 2 years
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
Formal Training
- MFRI EMT Course (or equivalent) – 207 hours, NREMT Exam, MIEMSS Practical Exam
- Hazmat Awareness Course – 8 hours
- Personal Protective Equipment and SCBA Course – 12 hours
On-the-job Training
- Completion of the EVFD EMS Aide Book
Additional Training for any Role
- MFRI Emergency Vehicle Operator Course
- Incident Command System Courses
